elevator signage

If you have any elevators in your office, you’ll understand elevator signage is important on so many levels! (Sorry, we couldn’t help ourselves.) These signs identify each elevator landing floor level, communicate safety procedures, and more! Let’s be honest: since more employees and visitors tend to take the elevator over the stairs (it’s such a welcome sight, you know?), it is essential to make sure all the proper safety protocols and identification elevator signs are in place around your elevator lobby and within the elevator itself.

Elevator Signage Display for Office Lobbies

When new visitors and customers spot the elevator(s) in your lobby, they get really excited. Why? Because it means they can delay their cardio workout for a few more hours! While call buttons are important for requesting a ride, elevator lobby signage is just as important to your office. For example, elevator floor number signs identify which floor it has stopped on—it’s the first thing that an elevator user sees after the doors are opened. In fact, these elevator directory signs must be placed on both sides of the hoistway (the elevator shaft) so riders can easily spot them!

Elevator signs also prove valuable in advising health and safety. During a fire emergency, elevator use is ill-advised as it will not correctly shield against fire. In case of fire, elevator signage displays remind building occupants to take the stairs during the emergency. In addition, in this age of social distancing, the days of cramming as many people as possible into one elevator are gone. Social distancing elevator signs are very versatile, as they remind employees, visitors, and customers to keep their distance and limit the number of passengers on a ride.

Does NYC Require Special Elevator Signs?

If you live in New York City, you most likely see or use elevators every single day, being in the concrete jungle and all. There are two elevator signs required for NYC locales: NYC elevator evacuation plans and elevator ID signs. Evacuation plans show the floor plan, evacuation routes, and other safety information. According to NYC Ch30, Section 3002.3, NYC-compliant evacuation maps must be posted directly above the elevator call button and include a sign instructing employees, visitors, and customers to use the stairs in an emergency.

The other elevator compliance sign required for buildings located in NYC is an elevator ID sign. This sign is posted on top of the previously mentioned elevator evacuation plan to inform occupants of the elevator’s letter of identification. Since each building most likely has a bank of elevators, these elevator floor numbers give a name and identity to each elevator!

I Operate A Business in California. Do I Need Special Elevator Signs?

Like NYC, the state of California requires elevator evacuation plans. Unlike NYC, however, each map is to be posted adjacent to the elevator call button. Another elevator signage display required by California is a specific type of elevator floor number sign. Make sure you buy two per floor because you must place one on each side of the door jamb or hoistway. Per California Code 116B.1.14, all California-compliant floor number signs are white raised characters against a black background. Note that ground floors also require a slightly different floor number sign marked by a star symbol.
