Human trafficking is the oppression of men, women, and children for forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation.
Human trafficking is an affront to human dignity, affecting people of every age, gender, ethnicity, immigration status, and socioeconomic background. Trafficking occurs in urban, suburban, and rural communities throughout Texas. Trafficking often happens in plain sight, so community members can help prevent trafficking by recognizing indicators.
Human Trafficking Indicators
Labor Trafficking:
- Workers arrive and leave at the same time/are brought to the location by a manager.
- Workers not having possession or control of their documents (ID, passport, license, travel documents).
- Workers are sleep deprived, have poor hygiene, or fail to make eye contact.
- Workers have untreated medical conditions/appear malnourished, dehydrated, etc.
- Employers illegally taxing, garnishing, or withholding of wages, or irregular pay.
Sex Trafficking:
- Excessive male foot traffic in and out of hotel room/s rented by the same person.
- Excessive phone calls to the front desk.
- Requesting rooms that have a "sight" advantage (to be able to see cars in and out of the parking lot and on the main street).
- Many cars circling the parking lot and drivers ending up at the same room.
- Garbage cans full of condoms.
- Person not having access to their own ID, cell phone, or money.
